Workers and youth are
being radicalised in Switzerland and are seeking answers to the
crisis of capitalism, but their leaders are not providing those
answers. That explains the successful intervention of the Swiss
Marxists in recent rallies organised by the trade unions, Young
Socialists and Social Democratic Party.

On 31st October–1st November the left student union (VSF) in Sweden held its 7th congress in Rågsved, south of Stockholm. The VSF has a close relationship with the Left Party and its youth organisation, the Young Left. Among other issues discussed was the idea of declaring the VSF a revolutionary socialist organisation.

Over the weekend of May 2-4 a conference was held in Berlin on the theme of 1968 - We shall win the
last battle , organised by the youth and students of the German Left Party
(Die Linke). There were 1600 people taking part in the conference and the
Marxists of Der Funke intervened in the debates, organised a stall with
literature, provided international speakers from Spain and Pakistan and one of
the Der Funke supporters, and member of the national council of the youth wing
of the party, made one of the concluding speeches.

We have received a very
interesting interview with A. Etmanov, the leader of the trade union of Ford (Saint Petersburg). This
reveals many things, not just about the Ford strike but about the state of the
Russian workers' movement, the struggle of the trade unions and their attitude
towards capitalism and the political parties.

Workers in the subways are facing an extremely grave
situation: the Committee for Ethics of the Transit Workers Union of Argentina has decided to revoke the mandate of our
delegates and expel them from the trade union organisation. We ask workers, social organisations,
unions and political parties to send us their support and solidarity.

Recent local elections
in Germany
have seen the Left Party (Die Linke) emerge as a force to the left of the SPD.
At the same time we are seeing a growing level of trade union militancy. This
reflects the growing malaise within German society as a layer of workers and
youth look for an alternative.

After years of Bush’s open-ended war
on working people at home and abroad, many on the “left” in the
United States and beyond are desperate for an alternative. For many,
that alternative is Barack Obama. Obama, has been careful to portray
himself as a “sensible progressive”. However, far from being a
“progressive” alternative, Obama is at his core a typical
representative of the bosses’ political parties.
