Farzad Kamangar, a teacher, journalist and civil
society activist in Kamyaran (in Iranian Kurdistan), has been barbarically
sentenced to death for alleged Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) membership,
without any shred of evidence.

On Saturday 19 July around
300 Kurdish teachers protested against Farzad Kamangar's death
sentence. At the gathering in Sanandaj, in Iranian Kurdistan, the
teachers read out a manifesto in defence of Farzad Kamangar, calling
his death sentence unjust and demanding that the authorities revoke it
and release him immediately.

According
to the international teachers' federation Farzad Kamangar was taken from his cell in Tehran's Evin prison on 26 November in
preparation for execution. Fortunately he has not been executed. The rumours and
preparations for his execution are despicable stunts that highlight the
real danger that this Kurdish teacher still faces. We urge all trade unionists and labour activists to support the campaign to free Farzad Kamangar.

On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. After previously rejecting Mumia’s request to present evidence of his innocence, as well as a host of issues showing that he was railroaded by a racist court, the Court turned down Mumia’s request for a new trial.

This morning I received news that jailed Iranian teacher union activist Farzad Kamangar may be hanged within the next few hours.br /

According to the Education International, he has been taken from his cell in Tehran's Evin prison in preparation for execution. The guards have told him he is about to be executed and they are making fun of him, calling him a martyr.br /

Four labour activists in Sanandaj, Iranian Kurdistan,
have been sentenced to be flogged and imprisoned for defending workers'
rights. The criminal court
sentenced the four to this brutal, barbaric and medieval form of
punishment because they had taken part in this year's May Day
celebrations in the city.

According to reports received from Iran five
workers from the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Company have been summoned to appear in
court in Dezful city, charged with a range of 'crimes' relating to the workers'
strike and other struggles.

Journalist and former Black Panther, Mumia Abu-Jamal, still faces execution by the US state. Last month the Appeal Court in Philadelphia ruled against a new trial. Thee will now be a new sentencing hearing, which will result in either execution or life in prison without parole.



This man has been on death row since 1982. It is widely believed that he was railroaded to jail because of his radical views and personal history. Among those who have taken up his case are:
