The movement taking
place in Greece demonstrates the enormous power of the working class and youth.
But it also highlights the weaknesses of the leaders of the trade unions and
the official Left parties who have no clear alternative to pose. The task is to
build a leadership worthy of the name within the Greek labour movement.

An example of a very militant strike in Severouralsk, one of a series in the
recent period. The miners were determined but the bosses were ruthless. This
experience is another indication of growing working class militancy in Russia.

Portuguese capitalism is one of the sick men of Europe. The cure the capitalists have in mind involves
severe attacks on wages and working conditions. But now a backlash is taking
place with huge strikes and demonstrations shaking the country, which is also
producing radicalisation on the left.

Bourgeois historians portray New Zealand as
a place where class conflict has never really existed. Such statements bear no
relation to reality, as the history of New Zealand is a history of class
struggle with the building of the trade union movement in the late 19th
century, the fight against the arbitration system and for militant trade
unionism in the early 20th century culminating in the great strike
of 1913. Today that tradition is once more coming to the fore with a rising
level of working class militancy.

An inter-imperialist clash is taking place in the Caucasus in which the Georgian dwarf is acting on behalf of the United States. The perfectly predictable and immediate Russian response - awarding Putin the first round - has only highlighted what an imbecile Georgia's president is. As a good nationalist, he (once again) made the choice in favour of an armed diversion, counting on US assistance which, though, was never going to be in the form of military intervention, when he should instead have been thinking about his country's disastrous state.

After six months of struggle, 18 days of strike action and
on the first day of their all out strike for a reduction in working hours, the
bus drivers of Barcelona have achieved an important victory. And they won as a
result of their united mobilisation, based on mass workers' assemblies taking
all decisions, and coordinated through an elected committee.

Since the beginning of
this year Belgium has witnessed a wave of wildcat strikes reminiscent of the
1970s. The movement has spread spontaneously from one sector to another.
Significantly it has rekindled class unity across the language divide at the
same time as the bourgeois attempt to divide the working class along national
lines.

On March 12, 145,000 workers took part in
a massive work stoppage in Slovenia. Rising inflation and low wages are pushing
the workers onto the path of class struggle. In line with the process of
radicalisation taking place across Europe, the Slovenian workers are beginning
to mobilise in a big way.

A marvellous Marxist
Summer Youth School in Pakistan was held at Fort Minro (near D.G. Khan) on
29-31 August. Even under the difficult objective conditions when an economic
onslaught against the working class is taking place in Pakistan, about fifty
comrades participated from all over the country.
