The protest of the
students of the Tarbiyat-e Moalem [teacher training] University in
Pardis Karaj, about 20km west of Tehran, has not only continued but
grown in strength and resolve.

Yesterday a communique reached the Campus
Antiwar Network national discussion e-mail list announcing the
occupation of the New School University's cafeteria by students both
from the New School, as well as from other universities in the
surrounding area from New York and New Jersey. The students have
occupied the cafeteria, claiming it as an autonomous students center.

As different struggles erupt among the Iranian working
class, now the students are on the move. On 4 June the protest at the
Tarbiyat-e Moalem [teacher training] University in Pardis Karaj, about 20km
west of Tehran, entered its sixth day with estimates of between 1300 and 1500
students protesting.

The workers of Iran
Telecommunications Industry in Shiraz, in southern Iran, have not been
paid for five months. They went on strike, including blocking the street opposite the factory, and they chanted slogans
condemning their situation, criticising their bosses and managers, and
even government leaders. The protest was broken up by the violent intervention of the riot
police.

Hundreds of thousands of school and university students, together with teachers, professors and parents are mobilising all over Italy against Berlusconi’s attempt to further privatise education. This has led to occupations of schools and universities. The response of the government has been to threaten the use of armed police against the students. All this is achieving is a further radicalisation of the youth… as the workers’ movement also prepares to intervene.
