Since
the collapse of Stalinism in Eastern Europe
the whole region has become a field of investment for western capital. Austria has
invested big time in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Now however all the
contradictions are mounting up and from a source of stability the region could
become a source of instability. Here we provide a brief comment on the economic situation of the CEE region.
The political landscape in Britain is changing before our
very eyes. This morning’s prominent TV news is of the tanker drivers’ strike,
showing scenes of pickets with Red Flags turning away lorries at Shell
refineries. The next item is the deepening government crisis, followed by a
warning from Gazprom that oil prices could reach $250 a barrel. It was like a
typical news bulletin of the 1970s.
A huge protest
movement has erupted in the mining area of Gafsa in Tunisia, and it is spreading. An
enormous gulf has opened up between an exasperated people and the authorities.
The response of the Ben Ali regime has been brutal repression with some workers
being killed.
Although still in its early stages,
there is clearly a reawakening of the Russian working class taking place with a
growing number of strikes taking place. Once this picks up steam at some later
stage it will cut across all the confusion and demoralisation that have been
dominant features in the past.
New Labour suffered a humiliating defeat in the recent
local elections, but those left groupings who were hoping to capitalise on
Labour's difficulties also found themselves in a mess. As Ted Grant explained,
the working class always ignore these sectarian grouplets on the fringes of the
labour movement and in times of struggle always turn towards their
traditional organisations.

The recent election primaries have stolen much of the progressive thunder -- badly. Barrack Obama's stentorian voice and uplifting rhetoric, two qualities often passed as "progressivism" in the United States, gets incredible press while the personal venality of the Clintons and their surrogates, (which mask serious policy choices anathema to a truly progressive agenda) is overly analyzed. Some substance!
We interviewed comrade Pepe Pereira, a leading
member of El Militante-Bolivia, the
Bolivian supporters of the International Marxist Tendency. Our first question
was about the recall referendum that will be held in Bolivia next week, on August 10th.
This statement was
unanimously passed at the World Congress of the International Marxist Tendency.
All efforts must be made to stop the oligarchy's plans to remove Morales, which
they see as a step in the direction of re-establishing their control over the
situation.
Hedge funds are in the news again. They don't much like
being in the public gaze. We wonder why. Does their speculation cause prices to
go up? Do they drive firms into bankruptcy so workers lose their jobs? These
are the questions being asked. Let's see what they get up to.
