countries in Europe, now Germany is being hit by a wave of student
protest. The same policies everywhere, cuts in spending and
privatisation of the education system, are provoking the same
reaction. The youth is mobilising massively, indicating that an even
bigger movement of the working class is being prepared.
The recent municipal elections
in Tel Aviv, although won by the right wing, produced a massive swing
to the Israeli Communist Party (ICP), which gained 35% of the vote.
Jewish and Arab workers, Jewish and Arab youth, voted massively for
the ICP. In the commercial, industrial and financial centre of Israel,
in the biggest city in the country a radical left mood is brewing among
the workers and youth.
On 10 November the workers of Alborz Lastic, the partly privatised tyre factory, protested outside the President's Office in Tehran. Despite the heavy rain and the cold weather around 800 Alborz Lastic workers took part in this protest and chanted slogans continuously.

being radicalised in Switzerland and are seeking answers to the
crisis of capitalism, but their leaders are not providing those
answers. That explains the successful intervention of the Swiss
Marxists in recent rallies organised by the trade unions, Young

minute lose sight of the fact that the power of American capitalism
rests more and more upon the foundation of the world economy, with
its contradictions and its crises, military and revolutionary. This
means that a social crisis in the United States may arrive a good
deal sooner than many think, and have a feverish development from the
start. Hence the conclusion: it is necessary
to prepare. These words of Leon Trotsky
seem written for today's situation!
The coup in Algiers by General
Massu paved the way in France for the rise of General de Gaulle to
power without shooting a bullet. Ted Grant exposed the role of the
Socialist and Communist leaders who appealed to the capitalist state
to take action against the insurgents instead of mobilising and
arming the workers, and tail-ended Pfimlin to defend the
democratic institutions , thus politically disarming the French
workers in the face of the shameful capitulation of Pfimlin to the
Generals.
